MOUNTAIN TRIKE FINAL PRINT

Once the designs had been finalised and the client was completely happy, they were sent off to be commercially printed. Emily and I were sent some in the post and told that we could come test out the product any time. They said we really captured the essence of Mountain Trike.

This is how the final leaflet design looked once printed

MOUNTAIN TRIKE FINAL BOARDS

The visual research really helped to find a design style to work with, it also gave us imagery to work with which would help to associate the product with excitement and extreme sports as apposed to just a plain old wheel chair. It was this initial research that gave us the basis for a designs.

The feedback we received throughout the process was really helpful, this gave us some discipline and also helped us to cut out useless or unnecessary information  it also meant we knew what needed including too and the colours which the client thought worked best.

Producing a variety of different layouts and outcomes was a good way of giving the client a breadth of ideas to choose from, this allowed us to combine aspects of each others design which they thought worked best, ultimately resulting in the production of a leaflet which the client said "captured the essence of mountain trike".

The design development process was fun but stressful at the same time, we were under quite a tight deadline so Emily and I had to work really hard to get everything sent off in time, But I found it beneficial and helpful been able to work with another designer. It meant we could give each other help and constructive advice along the way.

The final designs we sent off varied quite allot giving the client more options to choose from.

Here is the final design. We were both really happy with the end result, the work Emily and I had made was chosen as the final outcome, we exceeded the design team and Brandfuel which we were both extremely happy with. This was my first bit of paid work. Looking back I'm not a fan of the design any more and I would change loads but its done with now! The process was very helpful and has taught me lots. From transferring large resolution files to answering to deadlines and clients feedback.

MOUNTAIN TRIKE - INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

To give the client a range of ideas Emily and I came up with 2 separate versions of the leaflet. In terms of collaborating we advised one another on out decision decisions, and helping each other out along the way. This made sure that our designs varied but were of a standard we both could agree on.

As we didn't have much time to complete the brief Emily and I discussed our ideas in depth in order to narrow our content down. We decided on a select number of images to work with, that we thought highlighted Mountain Trike's best features. We also made decision's on colour, fonts, layout and style which was influenced by our research. Once we were happy with what we were gonna produce we both sat down and designed each designed a leaflet consulting each other along the way. I found this a very useful way of working. It made sure we didn't stray too far off away from our plan.

I Tested various different colours and layouts for the front cover until I found something we could work with. It was important to make the product look fun and stand out without looking tacky.  Our feed back specified that the logo needed to be at the top of the leaflet so it can be seen when in a rack this meant I had to come up with ways of making it stand out. We both agreed that the top left image worked best, it was noticeable and wasn't boxed in like the rest.

I was happy with the image on the front as this shows the potential Mountain Trike has, as
It shows the extreme terrain the wheelchair can tackle. The colours on the other hand didn't work very well. The brown colour looked mucky and tacky, and the green on white looked horrendous.

I took inspiration from visual research and applied it to my own design. I used tyre mark visuals to separate the images. This gave the impression of off roading etc.

As I only had a small selection of photos to work with it was important that I used imagery that showed off all the products best features, I also needed to include photos which showed the user having fun, as its important to get across the fun exciting aspects of the product.

In order to break the page up I experimented with flowing shapes to reference the hills the Trike can tackle. I also experimented with the cropping the photo's, I wanted to reference the wheel, and also try make it a bit more visually appealing, however I think this limits the design.

Here you can see examples of imagery inspired by our visual research, I have used playful colourful shapes to try and emphasise the playfulness of the product. I have also used a gritty font for the tag line take your self further which captures what mountain trike is about.

There is far too much going on here but this is an example fo some of the imagery I was working with.

After feedback we looked at our designs and decided what worked best and what didn't then made our corrections and alterations. Leaving the content to be added to the design.

Here you can see the layout of the leaflet with room for information to be inserted.

The key information to include on the inside design of the leaflet is the details of the product, showing an annotating diagram of all the features of the mountain trike, in a clear and legible way. I kept with the mountain trike colour scheme here using green quads to highlight the features of the product.

another piece of key information we included was personal accounts of the products, with positive quotes which helps to give people faith in the product, I have tried to include as many as possible without making the leaflet look too cluttered.

It was important to show the products fold up capabilities as
this is a huge thing to take into consideration when buying a mountain trike.
It is essential it can be transported around.

FINAL MOUNTAIN TRIKE DESIGN SUBMISSIONS

We sent off two very different trifold leaflet designs to the client based on the research and feedback from the brief in order to give them a choice of different styles.

Design  1

Design 2

Feedback

The client had already selected a BrandFuel leaflet design previous to our collaborating on this brief, however, we sent off our final two designs to them anyway and received this feedback:

The alternative designs you sent are exactly the kind of thing that I wanted!  Havent sent it to the rest of the team yet, but I think they are really good and really capture the essence ofMountain Trike!

Mountain Trike, the client, ended up selecting one of our designs (design #2) instead to be printed for their new leaflet over the BrandFuel original designs! It was very exciting to know that our work was favoured over a professional design team and would
be professionally printed.

We received this email (sent to BrandFuel, Emily & I) from the client once the designs were finalised:

I just wanted to drop a quick note to you and your team to say a massive THANK YOU for all your time, energy and patience (!) that you dedicated to our new Mountain Trike leaflet.

The result is great and we are as I type waiting for the printed version to be delivered which I will, of course, send on some copies to you all.

The team here at Mountain Trike very much appreciate all the work you have done and we are sure this leaflet will help strengthen our brand and be a great marketing tool to use when approaching customers.  We have an exhibition next week - The Motability Roadshow in Peterborough so it will be a great opportunity to launch the new leaflet.

MOUNTAIN TRIKE CONCEPT IDEAS

In order to make sure Emily and I were going down the right root we decided to research some different design styles which we thought Mountain Trikes image needed. From here we produced work which had taken inspiration from various extreme sports magazines etc, as we wanted to make the productmore about the fun and outdoors as apposed to a boring product spec leaflet. We mocked up some concept board to send off to Brandfuel in order to get feedback on what works and what doesn't. We didn't want to waste time going straight into our final designs so we thought this was the best option to start with.

We took inspiration from various downhill bike magazines etc.
In order to make the product look more fun and exciting. We needed to
emphasize its off road all terrain aspect of the product.

We put together a series of rough layout ideas using the photos supplied to communicate a range of different ideas so that when go into the final design, we know which style is the most preferred/appropriate, experimenting with fonts, shapes and colours also.

We experimented with tyre marks to emphasize the off road aspect.

We also included some graphics and geometric shapes inspired from some of our visual research. We wanted to make the leaflet design more up to date and modern, so we
used bright colours  and bold big shapes to do so.

We created rough mock ups of how we could display information and imagery in a fun
and eye catching way. We also experimented with logo placement and text.

The images and content that mountain trike wanted to include were not exactly exciting or sold the product, in order to try and give the product more life we used a variety of different methods to try brighten things up, mainly using bright colours and reference to imagery in our primary research.

Circles and tyre tracks
Lines and large images

Photo Selection

As we were sent lots of images to work with it was important that we narrowed it down to the ones that we thought promoted the product the most and ones which highlight the capabilities of Mountain Trike whilst also taking into consideration Brandfuels Feedback.

BrandFuel feedback e-mail RE concepts:

Thanks for sending through your concepts.
We really like what you have done and how it has been presented.
You’ve had a good thought about concepts, design elements, font and colour palette before moving along with the designs.

I’ve reviewed with David; here is our feedback:

What works:
- Good choice of reference material
- Page 3 – we like the treatment of font on ‘take yourself further’, the grittiness suits
the product
- Page 4/8 – trace of tyre is a good graphical element and will work as a divider between images; try to combine to something in between both graphics
- We really love the sun/wheel graphic on page six
- Nice flow of elements on page 7 but try not to use one graphical element (circles in this case) too much, there needs to be a balance
- On page 7 also like the treatment of ‘Mountain trike’ in top right corner
- Page 10 – we really like the graph-like graphic on the left/middle
 - All colour palettes work well, also good choice of fonts

What doesn’t work:
- Page 7 bottom left – a brochure like this will sit in a brochure holder, so only the top part will be visible – ‘Take yourself further’ could mean anything. Branding MUST be on top as in design in top right corner
- Page 9 – too busy, stripy circles don’t work
- Page 10 right side design are too blocky and static

Could you please, based on this feedback, progress to next stage and develop two designs further.

MOUNTAIN TRIKE - EXISTING DESIGNS

We were sent over copies of the original flyer  in order to get an idea of the product and also the information that needed to be included on it, this consisted of product information quotes and pricing. The leaflet definitely looks dated and doesn't really make the product look that fun.

The greys don't work here. Not exciting at all.

My first impressions of the leaflet was that it looks fairly dull and boring, the colours are not great, and the layout of the leaflet does not really work. The logo looks a bit tacky spread across the page with the writing in a slant across it. There are definitely allot of problems with the leaflet and some big improvements can be made, I dont think the leaflet makes the product all that exciting.

The creative team at BrandFuel had also sent Mountain Trike their own designs of the leaflet, but were keen to pass the brief onto Emily and I to give the client a range of designs to select from.

These are the designs from BrandFuel for the new leaflet:

(v6)

Not a fan of the bogey green, The layouts not too bad, but could be more exciting.
The product annotation works well on the left hand side.
Titles of pictures work well, more youthful and playful.

Not a fan of the layout

(v4)

Too much white space.
Good choice of front cover.
Better Imagery shows the potential of the product.
Too simple
Tag line font doesn't work over image.

After seeing what Brandfuels creative team came up with, Emily and I had a an idea of the standard of work we had to match. These design's were much better than the existing leaflet but still lacking that fun playful aspect of the product. The colours  weren't the best and there was lots that could be done with the layout. This gave us the basis for our ideas and also showed us exactly what needed to be included within the leaflet design.

Emily was emailed the client feedback that BrandFuel received after having sent over these designs, which worked in our advantage, giving us guidelines and ideas on what not to do and what the client specifically wanted to see within the leaflets.

Client Feedback for BrandFuel:

Feedback to v4:
- Beliefs highlighted at headers of pages are good
- More variety of different people in the photos needed. Far too many photos feature our Commercial director Ed, despite being a handsome chap, we need more of genuine wheelchair users from the folders.
- More pictures and a few short quotes in the centre fold from our customers (these can be found on our current leaflet) and people who've tried the Trike
- Family shots, parent and child etc to show range of users and uses.
- The 'history' text ie about Tim we can loose if it helps in terms of space
- More colour, less white background
- web address on front page and rendered green logo instead of black version
- CAD drawings of trike will be too small to read dimensions off and don't add value. A large product shot would be better for the features/benefits
- the shot of the trike in the boot of the car is really useful to have to show people when discussing the Trike at exhibitions
- info on price doesn't need to take up 2/3 of a page, again if space is an issue
- little mountain symbol is nice though I think using the trademarked mountain trike 'M' logo instead would help get the logo recognised maybe?

Feedback to v6
Front reveal
*  Front image - not good as its Tim is wearing a crash helmet.  Not the image we want to give.  Revert back to original one of Ed on pebbles please
*  Too many different fonts happening on the leaflet overall - on front cover needs to be lighter font and maybe a little smaller.  Copy should read 'a life of freedom not 'with'
*  Font on imagery we like - gives it movement - can we add little captions to the inside lifestyle images too?
*  Blocking of text ie on the front and telephone details etc - really do not like - needs addressing
*  Logo on the front needs to be solid colour and bigger
*  I think the white blocking at the top with our 'We believe' copy is detracting from the main point of leaflet so I would suggest that we remove this copy and the white border as it seems to serve no purpose then the imagery can be full bleed.  On the front cover - may need some kind of space to ensure that logo stands out - will leave this with you
* In terms of images - front cover of Ed, replace the Ed beach on the three images with the snow image.  Back reveal - see if there is a better one of Steve and his son on his bike as he looks a little awkward, maybe replace the three chairs image with the guy in the playground with his son?
* on insert pic can they have rounded edges - bit less harsh?  See how it looks in the design
*copy on middle panel - take off (VAT-free) and please can you add 'For technical issues please call Tim 07816955945

Back Reveal
*  Arrows pointing to various areas of Trike should now cross over main image or cross with each other please address
* Website address needs to be added somewhere
* white blocking and 'we believe copy to be removed
* rounded edges on insert pics?
* spacing on arrow copy - some too close to hero pic
* take off line above colour palette image 'available in .....'
* see note re:images as above

Overall look needs some consistency of colours used for backgrounds etc to fit our branding. Not too keen on the swamp green background under the pricing and centrefold needs a nicer shade of green.
Captions for images will depend on final images so could you just pop in anything for now so we can see visually what it would look like and then I will supply once all images confirmed.  Some options could be:

*  Family Trips out
*  A walk in the woods
* In the park

We like the 'We believe... on the front cover but not sure how much it adds on the other sections - certainly don't want it to influence too much on design ie placed in large white border - maybe there is a cleverer way of showing it without it taking over....

Definately can't put intro copy over image of trike as this is the 'hero' shot and shows all the key features and benefits of the Trike and we like the clean look.  Maybe once the white top boarder issue is addressed there may be more room.  Quite liked the colour blocking inside reveal, on concept 2 which contained the intro copy so maybe this is an option?

In terms of corporate colours - no we don't have any other colours apart from the green and grey - just whatever colours are used just need to be complimentary to these.
