CONTRAST OF SATURATION PANTONE EXPERIMENTS

The contrast is formed by the juxtaposition of light and
dark values and their relative saturation.

I tested my objects on different backgrounds.

100 THINGS // HUMMING BIRD = PENNY

For this poster my fact is : A penny weighs 3.5 grams this is the same weight as the average humming bird
I started by creating this image on illustrator using the pen tool
 I added a background I created, I used green to signify money
Once I had my image in place, I played about with type
to form a pound sign (£)
 I tried creating curved text and experimenting with colours. Also manipulating letters like the golden 'A'
Here is my final design for this Poster

After creating the poster above I decided to try an alternative in a different style, I started by drawing the outline of a humming bird on illustrator then filling it with black

 From here I overlayed a few images and textures and created another clipping mask
in the shape of a penny to represent the connection

 I then added text that curves round the penny, I think this gives
a nice composition
 Finally I added the back ground and logo and played about with layout

Overall I am quite happy with these posters and feel they all work well. Ideally it would be nice to
get them screen printed but due to time constraints this is looking unlikely. The colour scheme is minimal
and this definitely works in its favor.

100 THINGS // Product Ideas

From the information I have collected so far I will try and produce some of the following products as I feel they relate to the data I have collected. Hopefully I will have time to produce them.

  • Poster
  • Booklet
  • Money Box
  • Treasure Chest
  • Leaflet
  • Wallet
  • Card
  • Money
Here are some Design sheets I have produced to help me get some ideas of where to go from here:
I quite like the idea of origami, so if I have time I will try and look further into this.

100 THINGS // RECESION FACTS

Seen as I am covering the topic of money it would be foolish to not look at the recession here are some facts I found from www.ukrecession.com

  • The UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI) annual inflation rate rose to 3.3% in November, up from 3.2% in October, official figures show.
  • It followed record price rises for the October to November period in food, clothing and furniture, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
  • CPI inflation remains well above the government target of 2%.
  • Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation - which includes mortgage interest payments - rose to 4.7% from 4.5%.
  • Food and non-alcoholic drink prices were up by 1.6% between October and November, compared with a rise of 0.6% a year ago, the ONS said.
  • Clothing prices also rose by a record amount - of 2% - between the two months, with the biggest price rises found in men's outerwear.
  • Furniture, household equipment and maintenance also showed a record price rise of 1.6% between October and November.
  • The Bank of England expects inflation to remain high into next year, pushed higher by rises in VAT from 17.5% to 20% at the start of the year.
  • Some believe this will provide a screen that will allow retailers to put through more extensive price increases.
  • A report released on Tuesday by KPMG said that 60% of retailers and consumer product manufacturers planned to increase their prices over and above the VAT rise.
  • A British Retail Consortium spokesman, however, said the report was "nonsense".
  • The inflation rate has now remained above the 2% target by one percentage point or more for 12 months, and the Bank of England's governor, Mervyn King, has had to write four letters to the chancellor this year.
  • But with the new government having announced the biggest round of budget cuts since World War II, the Bank still expects the resulting slowdown in spending to bring inflation down over the next two years.
  • Commenting on the inflation figures, BNP Paribas economist Alan Clarke, said: "It's a disappointing number and it's only going to get worse in the next couple of months."

100 THINGS // Money Logo?

I wanted to create some sort of branding for the product so I looked at a range of logos I could use to go with my products, I wanted something quite formal and playful so I drew up some different Ideas, I tried a range of serif and sans serif fonts but eventually settled for Times New Roman as I thought this had a profesional quality to it and also looks quite formal. I used the queens head in the 'O' to signify the money aspect.

Self Evaluation

what is the problem?
to inform, entertain and help the public with general money facts and tips

what subject/area of study are you focusing on?
I'm looking at bank notes - the lifespan and life cycle, also interesting facts you wouldn't necessarily know I am hoping to look at the recession and also money origami

to what depth are you investigating this area/subject? is this sufficient?
Due to a change in direction I have swayed away from my previous topic of lost cities so at the minute my research into money is only really starting.

what is the form of your research to date?
So far I have done allot of blogging, also notes and sketches in my notebook. Also a survey online.

what visual material do you have to work with?
Originally I collected 200 images or so to do with lost cites but since I started looking into money I have just been looking at the security features on notes, money origami and other money related imagery and posters

is there an appropriate amount of work for the time you have had to develop it?
I think I have produced a good amount of work so far, I just need to crack on with my research for my new topic and start working on some visual ideas.

if there isn't, why is this? how could you improve your work-rate?
In order to improve my work I need to work on my time management. A plan or timetable could help.

What is your timescale? when is the deadline?
The dead line is in a couple of weeks, I have booked a print slot for the friday before hand in so hopefully I will have enough time to get everything sorted for then. I will use drop in sessions however as I feel it will be very busy on that day

What methods are you using to evaluate the progress of your ideas?
Annotating my sketches a blog posts.

Focus

what are you trying to communicate?
I am trying to educate, entertain and maybe help people looking at the aspect of money

what audience have you identified?
students, general public, the information isn't highly serious it will be light hearted.

how do you intend to solve this?
I am hoping to create a series of products such as posters, booklet, leaflet, money box etc. that will hopefully entertain and inform the public all the items would be promotional and free.

what further research does this require?
Recession Facts

Development

have you moved on from your initial starting point? if so how and why?
I have completely moved off my original topic of lost cities, I had researched in detail and I felt there was nowhere I could really go with it, so I then thought about looking at the preservation of money and then this has lead onto general interesting facts about money.

what processes will you need to use to develop your work?
Design sheets and regular blogging also critical feedback from tutors and peers hopefully screen printing and use of the scanner

do these processes require workshop access?
Scanner
Screen Printing

when do you intend to access these workshops?
Scanner through the week and hopefully the screen printing work shops in the last week.

Bag of Sand = £1000
Grand = £1000
Monkey = £500
Ton = £100
Carpet = £30
Pony = £25
Macaroni = £25
Apple Core = £20

Here are some rough visual ideas I came up with for the money slang terms I came across.

100 THINGS // FACTS

  • If you had 10 billion £1 coins and spent one every second of every day, it would require 317 years for you to go broke.
  • Have you ever wondered how many times you could fold a piece of currency before it would tear? About 4,000 double folds (first forward and then backwards) are required before a note will tear.

CONTRAST OF HUE PANTONE OBJECT EXPERIMENTS

The contrast is formed by the juxtaposition of different hues.
The greater the distance between hues on a color wheel, the greater the contrast.
I placed my items onto different back grounds
to experiment with the contrast of Hue.
