OUGD503 MODULE PROJECT REPORT & EVALUATION

Here is my project report book created on In Design.

EVALUATION

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout the module I have gained a variety of different skills. I have undertaken various different work over the module which has involved responding to clients feedback and wishes. This was helpful most of the time and helped to narrow down my design decisions on the other hand I found certain  feedback quite contradictory and unhelpful, but its important to produce something the client is happy with and throw out your own personal opinions, this taught me that there are always gonna be problems when working with a client and that its never going to be easy.

My collaborative skills have also improved, I have worked on 2 briefs with 2 separate people. The experience was not as a daunting as Fred made out, I managed to get on with both partners fine, it helped the design process as it was beneficial to bounce ideas off of one another, the combination of both minds helped to build a stronger concept and design style. It was also useful to see how other people work which also built each others knowldge of vaious software.

2. What approaches to methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The module has allowed me to build on my idea generation skills I feel, crits and collaboration work has allowed me to think in different ways, working with other people inspires you in different ways, whether its design style or research methods. Working with others has definitly helped the way I think about a project, its important to cover all different angles.

I have also built on my screen printing skills, the self initiated project I took up involved producing a 5 colour print, this was an ambitious task and took days to design and produce but I was happy with the end result. I made lots of mistakes along the way but I managed to sort out the problems, you learn from your mistakes.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

One of my strengths I feel has been my willingness to try something new. I have tried to do as many different styles of projects that I can. I have looked at branding, campaigns, digital work, print based and other forms of media. I wanted to try and get an idea of the different processes, to try and find something that I would like to further improve on in the future.

My briefs have been mainly been directed towards branding, as this has been something that I have become more interested recently. I have had the chance to brand a few companies over this module which I have really enjoyed. I have learnt how to say allot about a company with the least information, I also learnt the importance of branding running across a series of a products, the possibilities should be endless.

The module also lead me to concentrate more concepts when designing, as something can look shit hot, but if it doesn't comunicate the right message to the right audience its essentially useless. So getting down a solid idea was key to most projects and this fed into the design in a later stage. I found crits really helpful as well during this module as its always good to get an outside point of vue.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I feel I fall down when it came to the finish of products, I still think there is room for improvement when it comes to print finish etc. I also need to work on my layout skills as this something I am still struggling with. Even with laying at the simple project report I feel I could be much more experimental. I will experiment with grids in order to design in a more structured but playful way as my designs are quite simple and unambitious when it comes to publication layout.

My photoshop skills have been a constant let down I feel, I don't feel I have committed enough time to the software in order to get to grips and use it to its full potential. I hope to develop these skills over summer so I come back to college with a new skill set as I am limited greatly when sticking to Illustrator.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Time Management
Although this always comes up in my evaluations it is something I still struggle with. I personally find it hard to break off and do a bits of work from each module on separate nights and find it much easier to see one through to the end then start on another. But this means I am falling behind on other aspects of the course. The workload has put allot of pressure on this year. I need to try and find a solution to the problem.

Experiment with Different Design Styles
I seem to have a ver illustrator based design outcome for most of my projects so In order to try out different styles I think it is important to get to grips with other software as I am quite limited when it comes to designing. I need to work on my video editing skills and also Photoshop as this something I fall back in.

Developing a Concept
My concepts have become stronger over the course of the module, and I have begun to think more about the message rather than the aesthetics of the design. It is important to keep pushing and pushing ideas to try and produce more unconventional work which has innovative and creative whilst communicating the right message to the intended target audience.

Photographing Work
It is a bit of a shame when I produce some well printed design work and the photographs let the piece down. Often the colours are not clear and there are unnecessary shadows within the photos. I think this is due to my terrible camera and also my photography skills. I will try borrow a decent camera from now on and use correct lighting in order to document my final products in a professional manner.

Picking Briefs Carefully
I think it is important to choose briefs that challenges my skill set but also improves on it. Although it is good to try something new its not always the best idea. If I have a short period of time to do the brief building a website would be a bad idea as I am not very good at this. So I will make sure I carry out briefs that benefit my design practice.

6. How would you grade yourself in the following areas?

(5 = excellent, 4=very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor)

Attendance = 5
Punctuality = 5
Motivation = 5
Commitment = 5
Quantity of Work Produced = 4
Quality of work produced = 4
Contribution to the group = 4

INIZIO DESIGN - WEB DEVELOPER BRANDING - CLIENT BRIEF

BRIEF

I have been approached by 1 of my friends to who has just set up a Web developing company, he has designed a fair few websites over the course of the last year and recently business has boomed so is looking for branding for his company. This will be an ongoing process over the next few months. To begin with he wants a logo producing for his company inizio design, which specializes in web developing and design. He left it up to me to come up with the logo. He will also be wanting a logo producing for a hosting company which will be getting set up within the next 2 months. Once the logo has been sorted out there will be room for more work, I will need to produce adverts, business cards, flyers and also help with designing the web side of things,  colour schemes and imagery etc.

INITIAL LOGO IDEAS

I started by playing about  with different type and working out what works best.
Because of the name "inizio design" it was quite fun to play with as it has the 2 i's
It also has the same amount of letters in each word which can be useful when kerning
the type in the digital stages. After drawing the name out a few times, I realised the more rounded
fonts appear more current and up to date they also seem less corporate, which is what the client
is looking for. I tried adding a digital element to the logo experimenting with mouse cursors, and
also using the ON symbol to represent that they're on and ready to work, Its also a symbol
on computers adding that digital reference.

I experimented with different text, trying to keep it free flowing and rounded.
I also tried joining the text up so its, connected like the internet. I also drew it
in italic to represents the companies speedy delivery.

Badge Logo

The client also wanted a badge logo as well as just a type based logo. So i decided to play about with the Initials of the company I & D. I found these letters were quite fun to experiment with  I came up with a rough idea of where I wanted to go with it. From researching online I found that most web designers/Developers use blue in the Logos. I have decided to fall suit here as this gives the logo more of a chance of been recognised in that line of work.

I wanted to connect the 2 letters in some way, so I experimented drawing out a few designs, I quite liked the fact the letters kind of looked like a cursor when drawn in curtain ways. I wasn't quite happy with the logo in the end, I definitely thought theres was room for improvement as these designs were pretty standard.

Development

I had a rethink and rememberd some paradox shapes I had
seen and one in particular which was shaped similar to the designs
I had been coming up with. This shape definitely makes you look
twice so I wanted to try modify this to make it work with my ideas.

I drew the shape out in pencil first and then changed some of the lines to outline the I & D
I added on the dot on the i to make it more obvious and rotated the shape to the same angle
as the other logos. In order to make the Logo a bit more web based I added a cursor into
the negative space of the  shape. I think this will help to distinguish the company as
something web based just by looking at the icon.

Digital Development

I had to edit the shape so that the colour could run across different surfaces,
as it didn't look correct how it was originally, You couldn't make out the Letters very well.
Here are the edited versions with the negative space cursor. I am happy with how these
have turned out. I think the cursor works better with left hand side as this is how it would
appear on the computer. The logo is quite iconic and memorable, it definitely
makes you have another look to see whats going on.

Type Logo

I tried using various fonts but these 2 were my favourites. Myriad and 80's neon.
This font definitely matches the straight lines of the logo but
I still don't think it is quite as good as the neon 80's font.

I think this font better suits the company, It flows well and is well
rounded which I like , I need to make the logo a bit more rounded off
rather than straight cut lines.
I added the On symbol to the "O" to give it that computer reference.
I think the logo works well and represents the web design company well.

Logo  Type Experiments

The cursor shouldn't be this way. The logo on the right is unreadable when small
the type on the left works allot better below the badge.

Colour Reversal

The brief is going well so far, and the client is happy with the logo for the minute, But I still have changes and alterations I want to make in order to improve the logo and make it suite the text better. From here I will correct the logo and then make a start on the advert for this side of the company

MMZ LOGO DESIGN COMPETITION - DESIGN CROWD

I decided to do another day brief today, It was quite a small brief, they didn't seem to have a massive idea about what they wanted, this has given me a bit of freedom tom play about and come up with something I think represents the company and how it works. Whilst also getting across there needs within the logo.

The Brief

MMZ is a small startup company that has the mission to invest in other small companies helping them to achieve its goals not only with money mas also with managment skills from your owners.

We want to pass the image that we are fast, smart, inovative and more important: we help people to succeed.

Nice to Have:

- I want to have the company name in the logo and my preferred colors are blue and green.

CONCEPT BOARDS

Designs

Here are a selection of designs I submitted to the Design Crowd. I have experimented with different shapes, text and colour to give the client a variety of different options.

Full Pyramid Design

Orange, Green & Black MMZ logo

I decided to tone the black down to a dark grey,
there is less of a contrast now. Also a thicker weight text

Thin Text

Green Version

I incorporated the slogan into the logo as a sun shape
at the top of the structure, representing power and
the companies all mighty glow and shine.
Grey Text.

OVER VIEW

This was quite a fun brief to smash out as it was quite easy to depict what the company was about and how it works. It made sense to use a pyramid structure within the logo as this shows a structure of hierarchy which is effectively what the companies about, the main company invests in others. Using the pyramid structure was the easiest way of showing this. I have submitted a variety of different designs so hopefully there will be one which they will go for. The colour scheme is not to garish and it has a modern up to date feel to it which they were going for.

Gem & Stone - Competition Brief / Design Crowd

The Brief

I have a jewelry business and need a logo design. The name of my business is Stone and Gem. The name represents the fun, edgy, and trendy pieces (Stone), as well as the more expensive, glamorous, and elegant pieces (Gem). I want the logo to somehow reflect that. I envision maybe two types of font and an ampersand connecting the two words, but I'm not set on that. I also don't want "too much going on". I prefer sleek and modern to cartoony and hokie, if that makes sense. But not so sleek and modern that it's just a few straight lines on a black background. I would also like some kind of icon or picture or something (I think?). Maybe that could connect the 2 words? Like a fluer de lis or??? I'm really not set on anything. I think once I see what I'm looking for I will know it. I can't wait to see what your creativity ability brings to my logo!

Target Market

Women - probably between the ages of 25-45

I decided to Undertake this as a quick day brief, I had a brief look online at other logo's, then just decided to sketch some ideas down and give it ago, She pretty much knows whats she's looking for as she's been quite specific, but is also open to suggestion,  she's wanting 2 types of font connected by an ampersand and maybe a fleur de lis.

Initial Sketches

To begin with I wanted to play about with the fusing of a precious gem and stone, and played on the combination of the two, I decided to use heart shaped imagery in order to grab the attention of the female audience as this is who the branding is aimed at. I wanted to keep the fonts quite simple and upper case to give it that serious feel. Once I had got a rough Idea of where I wanted to go I started mocking stuff up on the computer.

Concept

The boards about explain the brief and concept through the digital stages. This brief was really fun, it took langer than I expected as I kept playing around with different patterns and idea's, but in the end I think I have answered the brief to the best of my ability, I hit all the criteria she asked for even sticking with her fleur de lis idea, I did try other designs involving diamond patterns however I think there fleur de lis logo works best, It is elegant and glamourous yet has a modern trendy quality too it as well. Submission for this brief was a bit poor as you can only submit one design, no concept boards etc. just the image Which I didn't realise until I had produced my boards, luckily you can add supported media. The brief closes on the 8th of April so fingers crossed for an email congratulating me and a $200 dollar payment!
