ISTD MUTTON QUAD FEED BACK

Strengths

  • Good Breadth of Research, identified different methods of delivery.
  • Strong idea and concept menu
  • Thought about how it will permeate through the restaurant.
  • Light hearted tone of voice works well and is effective across products so far
  • Typografeast works really well - informative about type and the content (food)
  • Puns are a good starting point - would like to see the final result

Ares for Improvement

  • Strong focus on type...could be too much - think of a consistant theme for all your proposals
  • Aiming it at designers might not be the best idea, small target audience who will have a strong appreciation of design could put consumers off if they don't like the design/approach.
  • Black and white colour scheme is too serious.
  • If in colour consider relevant colour scheme so the tone of voice doesn't come across wrong.

Considerations

  • Where else would the type be?
  • What about the exterior of the restaurant?
  • Consider deliverables. What are the final products going to be?
  • Branding + Identity, think about the designs, colour, fonts
  • Incorporate concept into logo - something clever and witty.
  • Would like to the see the products photographed well like the research examples.
I agree with most of the comments made. I don't think I wil be using a black and white colour scheme as I want to create a warmer image for the restaurant. Also the restaurant is not going to be aimed at just designers. It is heavily design based as I am wanting to create the studio environment. The restaurant will be a design/type studio converted into a restaurant essentially. I am wanting to create the design experience for the diner. Its supposed to be fun but also informative. I will work on the branding for the restaurant from this point on as I think I have the restaurant concept down.

Questions that I want answering

What kind of music would work best over the clip?

Fantasy, magical music fun and exciting. - Research sims music and existing lego music

Do you think it needs more text on the video?

Either that or someone talking over the video, children are the future, if they play with lego from a young age they could end up creating buildings of the future.

Is it too long / short?

Not long enough they wanted to see more.

Are there any other landmarks you think should be included / removed?

Remove the Taj Mahal. Add the Eiffel Tower, Shard, Sydney opera house, Angel of the north, London eye, Chrysler building

Do you think this is appealing to both the parents and children?

Yes -works well. Would try get rid of the blue background though.

CLIENT - NOLLIS AUTOMOTIVE DETAILING SERVICES - LOGO AND BRANDING

I was approached by a client who was just setting up an auto motive detailing service company. He wanted a logo coming up with for his company. He specializes in thorough car cleaning and servicing right down to taking it to bits. He wanted something that stood out but also something that represented the line of work he was in.

I decided to use a clean blue colour which represents cleanliness. The colour is also bright and recognisable. I decided to use a steering wheel / tyre to represent the relevance to cars and wheeled vehicles. I also wanted to incorporate a number plate into the design to enhance the whole vehicle element. I wanted the logo to be different from other conventional detailing services. And also use a quite up to date design style as aposed to the conventional boring logos you see everywhere.

After showing the logo to the client the logo he loved it and immediately wanted some business cards designing.

As I wanted to get across the detail that he goes into whilst servicing cars, I decided to use a kind of blue print background, which represents the stripping down of the cars to its raw elements like in the design stages where everything is brand new and just bits ready to be put back together. I decided to put a gradient on it to represent the shine or gleam from a car.

Here are some examples of the backs I experimented with

Final Business Card

He decided on this Layout for the final outcome

Land Rover Vinyl

Vinyl Proof

After I had created the business cards for him and they been sent off he decided he wanted a vinyl for his land rover to advertise his company so I sent him over the logo to be sent away to have the vinyl made.  Unfortunately it went a bit wrong from here. The client sent off the wrong logo to the vinyl cutters. Also I was not in charge of the lettering and this was left up to the Vinyl creators which was a bad decision. As the writing on the window doesn't fit in with the logo itself I feel.

Stickers for Cleaning Products

The client wanted some simple stickers producing with the products information on the back and simple the logo  on the front with the name underneath, They are pretty simple but that is all that was needed for the cleaning products. It was mainly just to help with the organisation of his products.

This project was a very helpful I learnt about sending stuff out to be printed commercially. The first time I sent the business cards off to the printer I had forgotten to add crop marks and bleed, fortunately the printers contacted me and I sent of the correct version. This was a small insight into the world of commercial print, and has helped me to prepare documents for print.

DESIGN FOR PRINT BOOK - FINAL

After speaking to the lady in bookbinding down at vernon street she advised that the best way to put my book together would be to japanese stitch the book. In order to do this I trimmed my pages down to the right size then began my backing the front and back cover with buckram.

After glueing the fron and back cover I used the press to De-boss
the title onto the front cover. This took a couple of attempts as the first
time I applied too much pressure and the writing came through.

Evaluation

Overall I am happy with how the book came out. I had to cut back some of the pages in the book due to a time issue but I dont think the book has suffered for it, its still 40+ pages covering various different topics to do with print. It looks at  preparing artwork, stock considerations, colour for print and lots of different processes which are available to use. I learnt lots about printing during this project. I learnt all about the different printing methods. I also learnt allot about stock through ordering samples online and testing them out. I managed replies from 3 of 15 companies I emailed  which is pretty rubbish, but at least I got a wide range of Stock.

Problems

I have had a few issues along the way with this project. At first I created the first 20 pages and didnt save it when my computer crashed so that set me back a week or so. Not something that I will do again.

I also had a problem with the final stages of the book. When it came to trimming the book down I managed to over trim on the top edge of the book. It hasn't really got rid of any of the information but it has spoilt the layout of the book a bit, but this is a learning process so this is another thing I will be careful with the next time I come to making a book.

During the final stages of putting the book together I de-bossed my first cover and applied too much pressure so the lettering went through to the over side. But I managed to get the 2nd one just right.

The majority of the text was taken from "The Production Manual" by Gavin Ambrose and Paul Harris. This was a valuable resource for this project. It explained things allot easier thatn allot of the stuff I found online.

ISTD Brief - re-write

Brief

Come up with the branding and identity for a possible new typography based restaurant. You will need to consider how the theme could continue throughout restaurant. This could be anything from the interior design of the restaurant, to the type of food on the menu. Think about typography terminology and how you could include this into aspects of the menu and the visual aspect of the restaurant.

Considerations

Consider interesting types of food for the menu... type/food puns
How will the food be presented? Layout, shape
Typographic Terminology
The interior and exterior of the restaurant

Tone of Voice

You should take a comical approach to brief making this fun and as light hearted as possible.

Target Audience

The restaurant is mainly aimed at designers of all ages but should also create an interest for general members of the public as we are wanting to create an interesting dining experience that everybody can enjoy.
