YCN LEGO - WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT & CRIT FEEDBACK/RESPONE

The Design

In order to expand on the campaign I will propose a competition for children of all ages to get involved with. This will be mentioned in the stop motion video, it will display a link, and from here you can go away and find out more about the competition and the prizes available. I started mocking up the website on illustrator trying to make it as child friendly and as easy to understand as possible, as kids will be using it to submit there models.

Colours

 Primary
 Shades
 Secondary

After reading the brand guidelines I realised there were allot of rules that needed following. First and formost the colour scheme was quite strict. I decided to try and stick to the main primary colours as you see below with the red, yellow, blue and green.

Idea 1

This was the first design that I came up with for the website. I wasn't very happy with it at all, and after going to a CRIT it was made apparent that it was not very child friendly.

Crit Feed Back

Bad
Not very child friendly
Too Dull
Too much White space
Plain

Good
Good use of colours and brick button idea works well
They also loved the idea of a competition and thought this was a great way expanding on the advert and campaign.

Response to the Crit

After the crit I decided to scrap my old idea and just go with something completely different. After researching other successful lego websites I found they were allot more playful and less modern like my original design. I decided to design a kind of castle building that would get over the idea of the building aspect of the competition. But I began to hate the idea almost instantly, with the colour palette I had I found it very difficult to create anything that looked remotely nice as there were so many different garish colours that were not working together very well.

I decided to scrap that idea and to have a re-think. I decided it might be better to have a kind of mascot type character who is associated with the competition which could be something the kids can recognise. I ended up drawing a lego builder which slowly progressed, I ended up changing the arms as I was unhappy with the proportions and it did not work as well on the actual webpage.

I also thought in order to make it more kid friendly I went with a comic book style image as this something that children read on a daily basis, its a more fun and interesting format to read from rather than a scroll down box in a block etc. I decided to keep the buttons from the original as they are bold and can easily be recognised as buttons.

I decided to narrow down the amount of text on the home page and try and make
it as short and sweet as possible, so that the kids aren't put off reading it. I went with a comic
book style font as well to enhance the concept.

Logo Attempts

I tried coming up with a few different logos for "The Big Build" competition but I was pretty disappointed with how it was going. I was pretty pushed for time so I decided to not concentrate on it and jut push the concept of the whole campaign in my final concept boards.

I decided to add a lego grid background to break up the white as
I thought there was too much poking through.

Added Pages

Home Page
|
Gallery - Prizes - Rules - Submit

Above shows what pages link off the 'Home Page'
I've made it as simple as possible in order for children to use it.

When you click on the 'Gallery' brick it gets larger and up pops a series of different entrants models
on the left hand side there are a range of different age brackets within the competition. Arrows allow you to slide through the different models, and an 'X' button allows you to exit this option and go back to the home page.

When you click on a model you like, the others disappear and your choice gets larger, from here it displays the name and age of the builder and gives you the option to vote. The best buildings from each age bracket will win a prize. This could be a one of competition or an ongoing thing.

For the sake of the Brief I decided not to mock up all the other pages on the website as I was mainly pushing the concept of my campaign rather than the design and the concept this was only an idea or proposal to pitch to lego. They hopefully can get the idea of my style and thinking behind the whole campaign. I mocked the home page up on a mac to see what it would look like. I am happy with how it looks. It cannot be mistaken for anything but lego, its simple and definitely appeals to a younger target market. It looks good and functions with ease. Overall I think I have done a good job at fulfilling the brief.

YCN LEGO FINAL CRIT FEEDBACK

FEEDBACK SHEETS

From the feedback I have decided to concentrate on the website and how I can
publicise the competition. I will mock up a website and how it will function. I need to also
create some informative presentation boards that clearly get my concept across. I need to change
song over the top as it is from the game SIMS 3.

I am wanting to maybe have a voice over on the video rather than the type.
It would be nice to have children speak over it.

Consider A2 Presentation Boards.

Has the potential product range been exploited fully?
Has the context of delivery been considered?
Has audience or gender been considered?
How much information is necessary or needed?

YCN LEGO VIDEO DEVELOPMENT

After starting to build a pyramid out of lego at home for a stop motion video I realised I didn't have half the amount of lego I would need to make impressive sculptures so I found a digital lego designing application where you could create sculptures on the computer, then in a separate view you could watch as all the bricks are placed down to create the buildings.

After searching online I came across loads of pre-made lego models
which was really helpful. I was able to come across loads of historic landmarks
as lego has an architecture series already. My idea was for the buildings to represent
the greatness of lego by linking it to these masterpieces of human engineering.
Also trying to convey that anyone can do it and there are no boundaries.

Using lego digital designer I could view the buildings been built brick by brick
which was a really cool feature however I had to solve the problem of
recording my screen.

Some aspects of the video I built myself to accompany the buildings

I managed to download some screen recording software to capture the video
this allowed me to video only a section of the screen that I wanted which was good.

After lots of hassle trying to convert it to the right file type I managed to get
them in the right format which allowed me to work out the glitches
in Final Cut Pro.

I had some debates choosing what song should go over it, but in the end
I went for some magical sounding music from Sims 3. I think it works pretty well
Its up beat and fairy tail like which draws your attention.

Progress so Far

Unsure about the Titles will see what others think.

YCN - LEGO CRIT

Feedback

Working Progress Lego Animation

Questions that I want answering

What kind of music would work best over the clip?

Fantasy, magical music fun and exciting. - Research sims music and existing lego music

Do you think it needs more text on the video?

Either that or someone talking over the video, children are the future, if they play with lego from a young age they could end up creating buildings of the future.

Is it too long / short?

Not long enough they wanted to see more.

Are there any other landmarks you think should be included / removed?

Remove the Taj Mahal. Add the Eiffel Tower, Shard, Sydney opera house, Angel of the north, London eye, Chrysler building

Do you think this is appealing to both the parents and children?

Yes -works well. Would try get rid of the blue background though.

YCN LEGO DESIGN IDEAS

I have decided to come up with some kind of video advertisement. Showing the possibilities of lego. I am either hoping to create a stop motion video or some form of digital video. I brainstormed some ideas of where the campaign could go.

I came up with various Ideas of where to go with the campaign, such as events like learning workshops,
lego land on wheels - bus, also various video campaigns.

I wanted to go with the stop motion direction acting out historic events in time.
Or inventions or famous landmarks, that everyone can relate to but also referneces
great things through the ages with lego.

Here you have great inventions through time.

Here are some historic landmarks through the ages.
I think this is the best Idea to show that lego was the original building block
if its showing buildings through the ages been built by lego.
I can also extend this through to the future to show
its inventing the future of play!

YCN LEGO BRIEF

For my Live brief I have decided to go with the Lego brief as this is something I reckon I will thoroughly enjoy. It gives me the chance to get involved with a big part of my child hood again. The brief is quite long, but in summary lego basically want me to create a campaign that distinguishes lego from all its competitors. They want to invent the futre of play.

In freds workshop we ran through an excercise to see if it was worth doing the brief in which we were given 20 odd questions of what we propose to do and why:

Why have I chosen this brief?
Imideiatley I was interested in this brief as I'm a huge fan of lego. I think it would be good to get involved with something I found useful and fun as a child.

What do you want to get out of it?
Creating a campaign is something that I have not done before so this will be a learning experience and it also gives me the opportunity to work in any medium I see fit.

What do you want to do/make?
I am hoping to dig out the lego and show the benefits and also the endless possibilities that lego has to offer. It would be nice to make some kind of gift pack or a stop motion video. It might be nice to work with video as this is something I have not tried doing yet. If i had enough lego I would create some kind of large scale Sculpture or workshop for the kids in town.

What is the problem?
Other rip off lego companies keep popping up that are inferior to lego. This means that if children were to get imitation lego and are disappointed they will associate that with 'LEGO' which could put the child off for ever.

What is it asking you to do about it?
Create a campaign that encourages people to choose LEGO over other imitation building products. Highlight the benefits of lego.

What is it trying to achieve?
Its trying to make the world know lego is the best and most beneficial building toy for children. Its trying to deter parents from buying imitation products.

Why do you want to enter it?
I dont think I will get bored of the brief as its something that interests me, and also the chance to work in any medium gives me the option to experiment and have fun.

What do you have to do?
I need to create a campaign that is porgional and is also apealing to the parents of young children. I need to convince them that lefo is the best toy! to promote its educational values and the other benefits lego has to offer.

What do you need to do?
I need to find out why lego is the best and why children would benefit. I need to sell the product in a way that appeals to the parents.

What can you do?
I can do anything I want aslong as I propose it with good reasoning on why it will benefit the campaign.

What could you do?
I can propose any idea from installations, workshops, mascots, events, advert etc.

What is the message?

  • Lego is the ultimate construction game for children
  • Lego has many beneficial factors for a childs education
  • Lego has sentimental value which no other construction game has
