ISTD BRIEF - Workshop

In this weeks workshop we had to choose 3 briefs from the previous ISTD competitions. From this we went through each one and highlighted all the key information. We had to narrow this down to one brief of our choice so I decided to look at the Mutton Quad brief:

From here we brainstormed some problems that we wanted to solve in terms of the brief and why

Next we broke the brief down a bit more and tried to identify some facts about the brief
and the target audience and 5 things we wanted to communicate.

Finally we came up with some products that we could come up with for
our final outcome.

Although we have to come up with some finished products.
There are many things I would like to propose to. I want to create
an experience for the consumer. I want to try and make type fun and
exciting for people, creating an overall new and interesting dining experience.

MOUNTAIN TRIKE FINAL PRINT

Once the designs had been finalised and the client was completely happy, they were sent off to be commercially printed. Emily and I were sent some in the post and told that we could come test out the product any time. They said we really captured the essence of Mountain Trike.

This is how the final leaflet design looked once printed

MOUNTAIN TRIKE FINAL BOARDS

The visual research really helped to find a design style to work with, it also gave us imagery to work with which would help to associate the product with excitement and extreme sports as apposed to just a plain old wheel chair. It was this initial research that gave us the basis for a designs.

The feedback we received throughout the process was really helpful, this gave us some discipline and also helped us to cut out useless or unnecessary information  it also meant we knew what needed including too and the colours which the client thought worked best.

Producing a variety of different layouts and outcomes was a good way of giving the client a breadth of ideas to choose from, this allowed us to combine aspects of each others design which they thought worked best, ultimately resulting in the production of a leaflet which the client said "captured the essence of mountain trike".

The design development process was fun but stressful at the same time, we were under quite a tight deadline so Emily and I had to work really hard to get everything sent off in time, But I found it beneficial and helpful been able to work with another designer. It meant we could give each other help and constructive advice along the way.

The final designs we sent off varied quite allot giving the client more options to choose from.

Here is the final design. We were both really happy with the end result, the work Emily and I had made was chosen as the final outcome, we exceeded the design team and Brandfuel which we were both extremely happy with. This was my first bit of paid work. Looking back I'm not a fan of the design any more and I would change loads but its done with now! The process was very helpful and has taught me lots. From transferring large resolution files to answering to deadlines and clients feedback.

ISTD - Work Shop Concept Crit

5 Ways the public will interact with my work?

  • Promoters on the street
  • Website
  • The Restaurant
  • Freebies - Vouchers/Leaflet
  • Posters
  • Events - Graphic Design Conventions
  • Promotional Stall - pop up shop - letter press chocolates - type food hand outs.
5 Things I still don't know?
  • How will the restaurant look?
  • What type faces will I use?
  • How can I make it a fun dining experience for non designers?
  • How will the restaurant function?
  • How will I promote it?
5 Problems that need solving and why?
  • How can I visually communicate my humorous Menu ? - It is important that the menu reflects the food that is offered. I need to make it clear to non designers what the menu is about and find ways in which they will understand the references. I could include a type journal/glossary in the menu or incorporate this into the visually aspect of the restaurant. Anatomy of type mural?
  • The restaurant needs to be an experience not just a meal. - This will help create an interest with non designers. If people like the concept of the restaurant they will be excited to get involved with the dining experience. I want to try and create the feeling that you are in a type and design studio. Each guest could get some sort of job roll or outfit on arrival. This will make the restaurant more appealable.
  • Expand the menu - Although the menu is quite large at the moment, I think it needs some adjusting and extending. It would be nice to do a drinks menu. With Pantone Wine selections or cocktails. I have received positive feedback for my food/type puns and think it would be good to work on this.
  • How can I brand the restaurant. - I need to test out some fonts and play with some imagery to try come up with a theme that runs throughout, I need to create a logo and general feel to the restaurant that sticks with the type themes. I am thinking maybe a design studio, with cutting mats for mats ...etc
  • I need to narrow down my ideas - at the moment I have tonnes of different ideas that I would like to go with but I need to narrow it down and think about the time scale. I need to work out my deliverables.

MOUNTAIN TRIKE - INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

To give the client a range of ideas Emily and I came up with 2 separate versions of the leaflet. In terms of collaborating we advised one another on out decision decisions, and helping each other out along the way. This made sure that our designs varied but were of a standard we both could agree on.

As we didn't have much time to complete the brief Emily and I discussed our ideas in depth in order to narrow our content down. We decided on a select number of images to work with, that we thought highlighted Mountain Trike's best features. We also made decision's on colour, fonts, layout and style which was influenced by our research. Once we were happy with what we were gonna produce we both sat down and designed each designed a leaflet consulting each other along the way. I found this a very useful way of working. It made sure we didn't stray too far off away from our plan.

I Tested various different colours and layouts for the front cover until I found something we could work with. It was important to make the product look fun and stand out without looking tacky.  Our feed back specified that the logo needed to be at the top of the leaflet so it can be seen when in a rack this meant I had to come up with ways of making it stand out. We both agreed that the top left image worked best, it was noticeable and wasn't boxed in like the rest.

I was happy with the image on the front as this shows the potential Mountain Trike has, as
It shows the extreme terrain the wheelchair can tackle. The colours on the other hand didn't work very well. The brown colour looked mucky and tacky, and the green on white looked horrendous.

I took inspiration from visual research and applied it to my own design. I used tyre mark visuals to separate the images. This gave the impression of off roading etc.

As I only had a small selection of photos to work with it was important that I used imagery that showed off all the products best features, I also needed to include photos which showed the user having fun, as its important to get across the fun exciting aspects of the product.

In order to break the page up I experimented with flowing shapes to reference the hills the Trike can tackle. I also experimented with the cropping the photo's, I wanted to reference the wheel, and also try make it a bit more visually appealing, however I think this limits the design.

Here you can see examples of imagery inspired by our visual research, I have used playful colourful shapes to try and emphasise the playfulness of the product. I have also used a gritty font for the tag line take your self further which captures what mountain trike is about.

There is far too much going on here but this is an example fo some of the imagery I was working with.

After feedback we looked at our designs and decided what worked best and what didn't then made our corrections and alterations. Leaving the content to be added to the design.

Here you can see the layout of the leaflet with room for information to be inserted.

The key information to include on the inside design of the leaflet is the details of the product, showing an annotating diagram of all the features of the mountain trike, in a clear and legible way. I kept with the mountain trike colour scheme here using green quads to highlight the features of the product.

another piece of key information we included was personal accounts of the products, with positive quotes which helps to give people faith in the product, I have tried to include as many as possible without making the leaflet look too cluttered.

It was important to show the products fold up capabilities as
this is a huge thing to take into consideration when buying a mountain trike.
It is essential it can be transported around.

YCN LEGO DESIGN IDEAS

I have decided to come up with some kind of video advertisement. Showing the possibilities of lego. I am either hoping to create a stop motion video or some form of digital video. I brainstormed some ideas of where the campaign could go.

I came up with various Ideas of where to go with the campaign, such as events like learning workshops,
lego land on wheels - bus, also various video campaigns.

I wanted to go with the stop motion direction acting out historic events in time.
Or inventions or famous landmarks, that everyone can relate to but also referneces
great things through the ages with lego.

Here you have great inventions through time.

Here are some historic landmarks through the ages.
I think this is the best Idea to show that lego was the original building block
if its showing buildings through the ages been built by lego.
I can also extend this through to the future to show
its inventing the future of play!

STAG DO T-SHIRT DESIGN

One of my friends back home asked me to design a stag do T-Shirt for his brother. The Brief he sent me said:

Brief

I would like a Full T-shirt design for my brother Bens Stag Do. We are going to Riga in December 2012 for a Lads holiday weekend. There will be lots of gorgeous women, booze and crazy shenanigans over the course of the weekend. We have a limo full of strippers lined up for ben on arrival, where we will be taken on a shoot for the day. So I would like a T-shirt that incorporates some of these ideas. The T-shirt will be white but I will leave the colours etc up to you.

I look Forward to seeing what you've got

Matthew

Design Process

I was quite excited to start this as it was given me quite allot of freedom, I didn't want your standard lads holiday T-Shirts so I came up with a funny illustration that I think sums up the weekend quite well, without being tacky and shit like allot of these t-shirts.

I wanted to have the stag in there as they were going on a bit of a hunting holiday and thought there could be room to play with it. I pictured this Stag pissed out of his head that had managed to collect loads of random shit on his antlers throughout the night which tells a bit of a story. So that is exactly what I did.

I started drawing outlines of stag heads until I found
a shape that worked best and had enough room
on the antlersto add various items.

Too simple, the bas is too wide and not liking the shape.
This was my favourite design it was well proportioned and
also had plenty of room to add stuff to the antlers.
Once I had the silhouette down I added the necessary items, I started with the alcohol bottles as the night begins, then decided to add the braw and hand cuffs etc, for the stag's late night treat! I just used simple illustrations to match the simple silhouette of the stag. To Finish the design off I added text under the image and then some legs, I wasn't really feeling this, so decided to add reference to the shooting aspect of the trip by adding the barrel of a gun and a target on the stag. I think this represents the weekend well in a fun and humorous manner. Its definitely different to the average stag do t-shirt.

Off to the Printers

Once my design was finished I sent it off to the printers for a run of 20. All the T-shirts came back fine and there were no hitches along the way.

Finished T - Shirt

Apparently they all loved the T-Shirts and had a awesome time.

But what happens on Tour Stays on Tour

Overall the brief was fun both useful, I had fun illustrating the image and coming up with ideas. I think I have successfully completed the brief and he was more than happy with the outcome. Unfortunately I dont have a
picture of the lads as they "lost the camera on the way home"

This was only a quick brief but it was the first T-Shirt i've had printed so it was nice to see what they looked like when they arrived.
